Impact of UAVs on Investments in Data Management
The rapid advancements in unmanned aircraft vehicles (UAVs), unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), and information technologies offer an important nexus for bold innovations in Earth observations. As developers improve the reliability, affordability, and accessibility of UAS observations for Earth Science application, scientists, forecasters, and decision-makers will have new or improved access to timely information collected about our Earth in dangerous and remote locations. UAVs have the potential to become a necessary component of a comprehensive system of Earth observing platforms delivering information for the Earth science community. However to fulfill this promise, we must match the best capabilities of both UAS and information emerging technologies to build an effective observing strategy that can truly deliver the information needed by the end users. In this talk, we will examine both the promise of UAS for Earth observations as well as the information needs of the Earth science community.
