Hector Ubiñas joined SDG&E in September 2016 and has been overseeing the Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) program since starting with the company. In this role, Hector is responsible for the daily operations of the UAS program and continuing to develop new work methods for its application in the utility industry. Prior to SDG&E, Hector served as a pilot in the United States Navy with more than a decade of aviation experience flying and instructing in the MH-60 Knighthawk helicopter and the T-34 Turbomentor. Hector deployed 3 times to the Arabian Gulf and Western Pacific theaters during his active military service conducting a variety of missions including aeromedical evacuation, search and rescue, and maritime security patrols. During his last deployment he developed operating procedures for integrating manned aircraft with the Scan Eagle UAS in the maritime control environment. At SDG&E, he operationalized the UAS program creating standardized procedures, building the employee UAS training program, and developing contractor management processes. Hector holds three FAA certificates with commercial and instructor ratings. He earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Ocean Engineering from the United States Naval Academy and a Master’s of Science in Aeronautics with an emphasis on aviation management from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.
