Drone Delivery: Regulatory Changes and Practical Applications

Sep 07 2023

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM PDT

Room 302-303

Large retail organizations have made headlines with their interest and investment in drone delivery platforms, but the value of these programs has been difficult to quantify. Is the technology where it needs to be to move the industry ahead? Are "off-the-shelf" drone solutions viable? What safety, security, environmental and privacy concerns need to be addressed for drone delivery to work at scale?

Session moderated by Dallas Brooks, Wing

Defining Drone Delivery Standards

Much has been written about why the creation of standards will be critical to UAS adoption but agreement about how those standards should be defined is not as universal. While various companies have sorted out how to provide drone delivery services in the current regulatory environment, enabling drone delivery at scale will require the adherence to standards that don’t currently exist. How are those various companies approaching the creation of these standards? In what ways will current operations taking place under Part 135 impact these standards? Join a panel of experts who will answer these questions and more to outline what everyone needs to know about drone standards that will shape the future of airspace.

Panel moderated by Dallas Brooks, Wing. Panelists include Lauren Haertlein, Jim O'Sullivan, Andrew Patton, and Jenn Player, and Eric Bergesen.

Regulatory and Public Perception Insights from Walmart's Drone Delivery Partnership with DroneUp

Through its partnership with DroneUp, Walmart has provided the American public with its greatest yet exposure to the benefits of UAS technology. After commencing drone deliveries in 2021, Walmart has implemented its drone delivery program across 36 locations in 7 states. The expansion has required Walmart and DroneUp to address federal, state, and municipality-specific regulatory and public perception matters, which has provided broad insight into how government agencies and citizens are receiving UAS technology. Most have welcomed drone deliveries with open arms. Walmart and DroneUp have successfully worked through various regulatory impediments and other hurdles as the program continues to expand. Grant Guillot, DroneUp's VP of Regulatory Affairs, would moderate a panel that would shed light on the challenges, accomplishments, and opportunities that have developed as Walmart and DroneUp continue to expand the delivery program. Walmart's Director of Federal Government Relations, Phillip Wallace, would speak to how the company has utilized its robust government relations team to ease regulatory hurdles and cultivate positive public perception. Carlos Trujillo, a seasoned Florida-based lobbyist who assists DroneUp with its outreach efforts in Florida, will discuss how Floridian government officials have embraced the program. Representatives from participating states/municipalities will also participate.

Panel moderated by Grant Guillot, DroneUp. Panelist include, Lindsey Dreilling, Carlos Trujilo, and Phillip Wallace, and Wyman Duggan.
