Matt Olson

Matt Olson has 15 years of Law Enforcement experience as a Police Officer for the City of Madison, WI Police Department (MPD). His primary job duties are in patrol services. In 2017, he became one of the first members of the Madison Police Department’s UAS team and is a Part 107 certified remote pilot. Matt has been a member of the WI State Drone Network since 2018. In this time, he has logged over 90 mission hours as a pilot and over 65 hours as Pilot in Command of public safety missions, conducted in both day and night hours, utilizing both optical and thermal payloads. These missions have included search and rescue, fugitive apprehension, natural disaster response, crowd and civil unrest observation, event monitoring, crime scene documentation and warrant service over watch. As part of the MPD UAS team, Matt has promoted UAS use in public safety by assisting multiple other agencies who don’t have UAS capabilities. Matt is an Airborne Public Safety Association (APSA) certified National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) proctor of the Basic Proficiency Evaluation for Remote Pilots. He has also completed New Mexico Tech Drone Assessment and Response Tactics course. Matt developed the MPD Unmanned Aircraft Systems Operations Manual and currently is one of the lead trainers on the team.
