BCM4414

What is it?

The BCM4414 in a VIA package is a high-efficiency Bus Converter, operating from a 500 to 800VDC high-voltage bus to deliver an isolated 31.3 to 50.0VDC unregulated, low voltage. This unique ultra-low-profile module incorporates DC-DC conversion, integrated filtering and PMBus commands and controls in a chassis or PCB mount form factor. The BCM offers low noise, fast transient response and industry leading efficiency and power density. A low-voltage-side referenced PMBus-compatible telemetry and control interface provides access to the BCM’s configuration, fault monitoring, and other telemetry functions.

The BCM module offers flexible thermal management options with very low top- and bottom-side thermal impedances.

Who is using it?

The BCM4414 can be used for tethered and non-tethered drones for communication, surveillance and many other applications where high voltage (800V or 400V) is needed.

How is it making an impact?

Dragonfly Pictures (DPI) developed the hover-in-place tethered drone. This new vertical lift-off drone is an engineering marvel endowed with extreme power to withstand the harshest elements and remain constantly airborne for weeks. The drone can provide 400+ hours of non-stop uptime and operations – at altitudes up to 500 feet – because of the continuous power flow through the tether. It extends communication range up to 30 miles while at sea. The power delivery network consists of the Vicor high-voltage BCM4414 VIA low-profile modules (4.35 x 1.4 x 0.37in) within its UMAR tethered drones to enable high-efficiency conversion (98%) from 800V to 50V. There are eight Vicor BCMs arrayed to power the DPI UMAR’s eight independent rotors.
