Ultra-Miniature Fiber Optic Gyro

What is it?

The VG221 is an ultra-miniature fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) for autonomous and unmanned systems requiring compact, low-power inertial sensing. Measuring just Ø33×12 mm and consuming 0.5 W, it enables high-performance operation where conventional FOGs are too large or power-intensive.

Built on MostaTech’s proprietary in-line technology, matured over 35+ years, it uses an exclusive 40 µm polarization-maintaining optical fiber to form all optical components along a single continuous fiber. This spliceless architecture eliminates optical losses, delivering low-noise performance, high reliability, and reduced power consumption.

The result is the smallest FOG in its class, combining extreme miniaturization with true FOG-level performance.

Who is using it?

The VG221 is used across unmanned aerial systems (UAVs), drones, and robotic platforms where precise motion sensing is required within compact, power-efficient designs. It is widely integrated into miniature gimbal and electro-optical stabilization systems, UAV flight control units, and short-term navigation applications, including operation in GNSS-denied environments.

How is it making an Impact?

Miniature UAVs and stabilization systems are constrained by limited space, weight, and available power, often requiring the use of compact sensors that can introduce drift and reduced stability over time – particularly in dynamic or GNSS-denied environments.

The VG221 addresses this limitation by delivering FOG-level performance in an ultra-compact, low-power form factor, enabling significantly improved stability and reduced drift without increasing system footprint or energy consumption.
